6 Must-Visit Cities in Ecuador

Quito

Nestled in a spectacular valley and surrounded by snow-capped Andean volcanoes is Quito. A beautiful city located at an elevation of 2,800 metres, Quito is officially regarded as the second-highest capital city in the world. With a population of almost 3 million, Quito is the perfect blend of contemporary living and tradition. The city is bursting with history and culture, which can be seen in its beautiful Old Town. The first capital city to be named a UNESCO World Heritage-listed Site, the old town has a Spanish heritage seen through its stunning architecture, taking you back in time to the mid-1500s. On a stroll through the Old Town, you’ll see gold cathedral interiors, giant sculptures, and open plazas where you can sit and enjoy the city’s culture, view, and heartwarming people.

Guamote

Located in the inner highlands of Ecuador, is the proud indigenous town of Guamote. This small town is full of brightly painted houses and is home to a strong united community. Most famous for its local Market taking place on Thursdays, a visit here will have you feeling like a true local. You will see traditionally dressed farmers, known as “campesinos”, buying, selling and even trading cattle, clothing, spices, fruits, and everything you could imagine. The locals are very proud of their culture, food, clothing and typical music; trust us, it will be hard not to fall in love with Guamote

Outside of town, you’ll find the Pailon del Diablo Waterfall (also referred to as The Devil’s Cauldron), a massive waterfall that creates a dramatic view – and plus, you can walk behind its epic cascade. ! Another famous sight in Baños is the ‘“Swing at the End of the World’”, a giant swing overlooking a mountainous landscape, the Tungurahua volcano – make sure your camera is charged, as you can take the most amazing pictures here.
