Tradition meets innovation
Much of South Korea's allure lies in its stark contrasts — a captivating blend of ancient traditions and high technology in advanced cities, such as Seoul and Busan. Our tour showed us both ancient treasures and modern marvels, highlighting the richness and diversity of South Korean culture. One experience took us to the beautiful Ssanggyesa Temple where we enjoyed a traditional tea ceremony and meditation with a monk, while the next experience involved jetting off on one of South Korea's technologically-advanced high speed bullet trains. Every experience added another layer to our cultural immersion.
Culinary delights: A party for the taste buds
Travelling is a journey of understanding, and one of my favourite ways to connect with a country is through their cuisine. The celebration of rich food culture unfolded through the simplicity of traditional bibimbap dishes, an array of delicious kimchi choices, and the discovery of the most delightful ice cream flavors. Your taste buds will be taken on a scrumptious tour of fresh ingredients and flavours with every bite.
Seoul: The perfect blend of history and modernity
Our adventure began in the heart of South Korea, Seoul. The city beckoned with historical palaces like Gyeongbokgung, where we witnessed the ceremonial changing of the guard. The newly opened Blue House, surrounded by lush gardens, gave a glimpse into the contemporary pulse of the city. We also rode the cable car to the N Tower, passing the picturesque 'Love Lock Bridge' en route. The tower revealed epic panoramic views over the capital city that is home to around 10 million people!
Busan: Coastal charm and temples
Busan was an absolute standout for me while exploring South Korea. I liked to describe it as the Gold Coast of South Korea; Busan exuded a vibrant yet relaxed beachside vibe. It was full of energy and the free nights to experience Busan on our own was ideal to fully immerse in the atmosphere at our own pace.
While in Busan, we explored the Oryukdo Skywalk, UN Memorial Cemetery, Jagalchi Market and Haedong Yonggungsa Temple. A Buddist temple nested on the cliffs of Busan's north coast, Haedong Yonggungsa Temple stole our hearts with breathtaking views of the East Sea, its intriguing history and architectural beauty — a total must see for any visitor to South Korea. Busan is also home to Haeundae Beach, considered one of South Korea's most beautiful beaches, and it's where the city meets the sea.
Gyeongju's historical splendour: Daereungwon Tomb Complex (Tumuli Park)
Daereungwon Tomb Comple, known also as Tumuli Park, is an UNESCO World Heritage Site in Gyeongju, unfolded the resting places of the Silla dynasty. The site is home to 20 tombs located under big grass hills, with each burial mound housing fascinating treasures and artifacts. A lot of the tombs remain untouched as Koreans believe it is bad luck or 'feng shui' to dig them up. The park's gardens provided a serene backdrop for exploring the rich history encapsulated in this ancient site.
Damyang's bamboo haven: Juknokwon Bamboo Garden
Journeying to Damyang country, we discovered the 'Land of the Bamboo' in Juknokwon Bamboo Garden. Walking through enchanting bamboo forests, the height of the towering bamboo was incredible and there were so many vantage points to take in the breathtaking scenery. The garden's intricate network of walking tracks allowed us to immerse in the tranquil beauty of this epic park.
South Korea is a country of true diversity and left me with a deep appreciation for the country’s history and the warmth of the local people.
