Sri Lanka’s food is so delicious and unique! I always try different food while travelling and Sri Lankan cuisine was certainly a highlight during Bunnik Tours’ recent Mega Famil.

Let me tell you about a fantastic experience on the Mega Famil (which is also offered on our Sri Lankan Discovery small group tour).  We were hosted by a local family for dinner on the banks of the stunning Gin Oya River. The night began with a cruise along the water for sunset before heading onto the banks for dinner. While we were cruising, the family had prepared a feast. The dishes included, chicken wings, crispy pork belly, prawn stir fry, rice and vegetables, fried potatoes and a whole cooked fish, just to name a few.

We were also offered a special arrack cocktail. Arrack, for those who do not know, is a distilled alcoholic drink made from the fermented sap of coconut flowers. It sounds interesting, but do yourself a favour and give it a try!

This was a truly wonderful special experience, with traditional songs, loads of food, dancing and so much fun.

Kottu, however, was my favourite Sri Lankan dish. It is also known as Kuththu Rotti or Kothu Roti, which means chopped bread. The dish is made using a Sri Lankan roti that has been cooked then chopped into bitesize pieces. It is then BBQ’d on a flat plate with eggs, vegetables and meat. The way the chefs cook on the flat plate is by repeatedly pounding the mixture with heavy spatulas. An absolute must-try!

Sri Lanka is a fabulous place to develop your taste buds! Don’t be afraid to try a range of dishes. If you’re an enthusiastic food lover, you won’t be disappointed.
