Beppu, located in Oita Prefecture, is home of over 2,000 hot springs (or ‘onsens’) with some as hot as 150 degrees celsius. Hot steam rises from the earth throughout this ‘city of spas’, a unique and visually stunning effect. The “Hells of Beppu” are seven spectacular hot springs with different temperatures and colours, ranging from bubbling mud pools to red and green pools, geysers and other hydrothermal features.
A visit to Beppu wouldn't be complete without relishing in Jigokumushi or "Hell Steam Cuisine". A truly unique experience only in Beppu, food is cooked in mineral steam from the hot springs, infusing the meal with a unique and authentic flavour.
